Default My first hunting season with my .308 mauser

    Hi guys

I had doubt in my .308 as I wanted a 7mm and they changed my mind. But I’m glad they did as for me there is nothing better for the animals that I hunt. I just want to share some of the pics of the animals that I shot this season. This first hunt was the kudu that I shot in the weekend of the 4th June 2011.This was my first kudu.

The second hunt we went to Victoria-Wes for some springbok on the 23 - 25 June 2011 there I shot 5 springbok. I only have the one photo of the ram as the rest was only old does and it "kapokted" while we were hunting it was cold!!!!

The third hunt was at Wolwefontein from the 15-16 July 2011 there is shot my first rooibok and I actually shot 3 rams, 2 does and 1 black springbok ram. This hunt was just brilliant. I could just not miss I actually learned my rifle. I shot 3 neck, 1 headshot, 1 frontal and 1 side as this was the only part I could see through the bush .

    Iwan,

    Lekker man!
Love the way you said: " Kapokted" - even sounds colder saying it that way!
With that silencer on the recoil must be close to "not much" now! Good shooting and enjoy the biltong etc...

There is almost nothing on it. I don't actualy worry anymore about how I grip it to my shoulder. So long i'm comfy and can pull the trigger. A plus is they buck don't know from where you are shooting. So your changes of bagging two at a time increases.

    Iwan,

Do you reload yourself or what type of ammo did you use on these hunts?
What type of silencer is it?
    Cheers

This was a custom build rifle by RH Gunsmithing in Port Elizabeth. He made the silencer for me also. The first 2 hunts I used factory 150gr pmp. But my last hunt I used reloaded ammo.
We reloaded with 42gr of S321 with 150gr SST Hornady points.
It shoots brilliant for me it's a bit faster than normal ammo and my trajectory is flatter or it seemed like it on the target shooting before the hunt.

I'm curious, what was "their" final argument that won you over to go .308 instead of 7mm?

Plus wat is the animals that im going to hunt - springbok up to kudu. Do I realy need that calibre and speed.

Glad that you're happy with your rifle, I also have a .308 (Musgrave). Best of luck with your future hunting trips!
