Default Please clarify something with regards to competency.

As I understand it you need to go and do a competency for black powder before end January 2012.

Now my questions are what happens to the black powder permit system?

Will you need to show the permit and the competency when buying black powder or only competency?

Do I have to again go and apply for a new permit?

The new permit system is one for life correct? You don't have to renew it like the old ones? I got my permit in November last year but haven't used it as yet.

I am in a catch 22 situation I have a shotgun that is licensed but is to old to use modern ammo so I have to shoot BP so i reload my own cartridges.

I am seriously just thinking of ditching the shotgun and getting a modern one I am just gatvol of jumping through all the hoops.

Thanks any help would be appreciated.

    Black ops,
The new competency is for Muzzle loading firearm not black powder firearm.
Your BP shotgun is as far as I can tell a breachloader, and should therefore be licenced under "Competent to possess a shotgun" comp cert. (The training U/S is 119652 Handle and use a shotgun.)
You will not need the "Muzzleloading U/S" for this.
If you want/must load it with black powder, you need a BP permit under the Explosives act.
The good news is you dont need another competency.
the bad news is your shotgun falls under the max four guns limit. (Unless you are dedicated.)

Go dedicated - keep the old one, and buy a modern one too.

    Hi Willie

I spoke to some gun shops and the problem is as per some DFO's they make their own rules as they go along. I explained that I have a shotgun comp and that I have a license for my shotgun everything. I also have the new type black powder permit the one you don't have to renew every time you buy black powder. They still say they will not sell me black powder or Sannadex after January 2012 if I don't have a muzzle loading competency.

That is absolutely ridiculous - they expect you to have muzzleloading competency for a breachloading firearm!

And yet we have to hear from a police colonel that all DFOs are welltrained and know the FCA.

Well, it is rather presumptious to expect logic from a government agency.

I agree fully, it is all very confusing at the moment for them as well as they cant give me a straight answer. I will see how things progress and then decide if I will sell the shottie to buy a pump action with the cash.
