    Default 8x57mm SJ Mauser

I received this rifle, a 8x57 SJ Mauser as a gift from a friend, he bought it 25 years ago and used it once, I would like to revamp it and use it to hunt with...please be so kind as to advise me on the strategy I should follow to fulfill this wish. If possible tell me more about this weapon and the ammunition it requires. I would further more like to come in contact with an owner of the same caliber weapon as mentioned.

I suggest take it to a competent gunsmith and have the bore checked. If the bore is 8.2mm (.323) (JS) you have a range of options regarding bullets. If it's 7.9mm (.318) (J) you have to load you own ammo. You'll be more limited regarding different types of bullets. But it can be done easily! Let us know here.

    Hi Gert,

From the pictures posted it looks to be a sporterized K98k and should thus be a JS. If there is any markings on the barrel that reads to be 7.9 or similar it would be confirmation to the .323" version. But sound advice as given would be to have a gunsmith verify it as such.

If reloading, you could use from 130 grain up to 244 grain bullets thereby making it similar in performance to the 30-06 Spr and application should then also be the same. I load 220 grain bullets and use mine as a bush rifle. Enjoy!

Great medium size rifle. I think you will find the 8 x 57 favors the heavier bullets.

Gert, i hope you have a bolt for it.If not, this will be your first step - go to a gunsmith, and ask him to find you a bolt. Once the bolt is fitted, he must of course check the headspace with your new bolt. Now ask the 'smith to determine the diameter : 8 mm can be either .323 (S or SJ) or .318 (J).If the former, Highland AX, Winchester, Norma and others make ammo for it. 196 gr probably your best bet.If .318, you will probably have to handload - bullets available from Ken Stewart. I use his 200 gr roundnose, and it is an excellent bush rifle. If your eyes are good, and you can shoot well with open sights, you can use it as is. (some game ranches wont allow you to hunt with open sights though.)If you want to mount a scope, the receiver should be drilled and tapped, and probably the bolt handle will need to be bent. You may also need to remove that beautiful "klappiesvisier" to accomodate the scope's tube. The flag safety will probably need to be changed to 45 degree option - or you can opt to leave it, and never use the safety - the most important safety is the brain after all.Make sure your gunsmith knows his stuff, and get the quotation first. Personally, I do not favour spoiling the lines of such a beautiful rifle. It may be better to get another rifle for scoped applications, and use the 8 mm opensighted in the bush.Your problems only start at about 45 years when your eyes start to lose their ability for close focus (speaking from experience.)The calibre and action is of course superb.Willie Barnard

I run my 8x57 JS with 196gr Hornady Spire points with 46gr S335, it motors along at 2450fps.

I have, and hunt with, a Yugoslav M48, also in 8x57JS, hand load for it and love the caliber. It is my bushveld, open sight rifle. Last year my wife shot her first pig with it.
