Treeman, the recoil is not noticeable , the rifle has a great straight back , pistol grip stock design. The 29" inch stepped barrel makes for a smooth shooting rifle . The Mauser action/chamber /8x57 case design for low pressure ensures a dissipated recoil . It really is a great rifle to hunt and shoot with.

Reason I asked is a mate has many, about 20+ rifles, and he rocked up to hunt one day with his newly acquired rifle, a German made thing of great beauty. We put up targets and he sat down to set scope, took first shot and stood up with much expletive verbosity, plenty big eyes. Moaned that the factory ammo was too hot and "nee fok hulle is mal!"

Now Deon is the guy I sometimes write about and describe as my proper Ducthman, all the Afrikaans strong points, loyal-Fok jou, highly intelligent - stupidly stubborn, braver than a Jack Russel and scared of spiders, can not not apologise when wrong, but brings you a present to say sorry with out words. He is how ever recoil shy, but can take a punch like few guys I have seen.
He is also my good mate.

Deon just could not shoot this thing, so Pieter helped set it in, Pieter is the northern side of 130 kg and sometimes we have to tell him that it may be better to go to hospitable, cause he dont feel fkall. He also carries a Impala in each hand with rifle over shoulder back to bakkie when hunting.
He's statement was " die menneer is darem fris, lewendag " (or nearest)

Deon proceeded to miss a few animals with rifle that day and we never saw rifle in velt again, he does not talk about it and its now just part of his collectors Harem. The rifle embarrassed him I think.

I never shot rifle that day because I had just fallen on the Super Duke and was recovering still.
I have kinda mentally saved the rifle as a heavy kicker, but noted Deon is a recoil baby.

    The rifle was a 8 x 60 S - any knowledge on it?

I had a 8x57js rifle. Recoil was similar to my 303’s. A little bit more snappy. Some say on par with the 3006.

Treeman, tell Deon to upload photos of the 8x60 (.323) He need to take a soft cast bullet larger than the .323/8mm diameter and drive it through the barrel ..then take measurements of the slug...the 8x60 is not suppose to have such high felt recoil at all..

What ammo did he use ? Make sure it is a .323 " bore and not a .318 " bore he use the .323" bullets to shoot it .

Shooting .323 " bullet through a .318 ' barrel can have high pressures and recoil ...

The 8x60 Mauser is a highly sought after caliber and rifle. These rifles do not loose any value at all, the values of these rifles is always getting higher every year. You will be lucky if you can buy a Mauser 8x60 rifle for less that R16000 ..that is the starting price...they are few and far between to get hold of.....if I managed to get one in a great condition I would shoot it as is or I will ream it to the 8x68S...

I did shoot this Mauser 8x57SJ today, the double set trigger really is a great system to shoot with. I would just take off the current rifle scope and throw it away..it really is not a good scope currently fitted on the rifle. I used store bought Sellier & Bellot 196 gn rounds today.

I shot the Weaver 5-25 x 50 mm scope on my own Mauser 8x57JS today, it really is a beautiful scope to shoot with ..the glass is crystal clear and it tracks very well..my Mauser 8x57 JS with it`s 29.5 "inch stepped barrel really is an extremely accurate shooting rifle ..I shot it today from the prototype shooting sticks in 30 to 40km windspeed today and I still managed to put all three bullets in a 10mm circle..this was on 50 meters ...

I will be building the shooting sticks from aluminum round tube ..the wood dowl sticks are too soft and there is still a lot of movement from the sticks when shooting in this strong blowing wind...
