Which bullets do you use?
Which bullets do you guys use in your different rifles?
In my 22-250 I use 60gr. Nosler Partitions for springbok and blesbok, busy working up a load for 40gr GS HV bullets. The Partitions penetrate very good and I dont have any doubt about their ability to take game.
When i go after varmints i use 55gr sierra gamekings, these are the most accurate bullets for my rifle. After trying V-max 50 and 55gr, Sierra matchkings, Berger 52gr and Blitzkings, i got my load right on the 55gr gamekings. The gamekings wil group inside 10mm all day and under 5mm if i do my bit. I launch them at 3750fps and they demolish varmints ( meerkatte, rooikatte, jackal ). On jackal there is only a entrance wound, well actually a entrance hole, it destroys everything on broadside shots. Will never hunt with this bullet at these velocities, meat damage will be enormous and i will loose game if i hit large bones.
I use 165gr Nosler accubonds in my 30-06 for most of my hunting. I step up to 180gr Nosler Partitions if I go after bigger animals or bush hunting.
I also use berger 168VLD's @ 2800fps the give me 1/4 inch groups at 100m. They are amazing bullets for longer range hunting and target shooting.
My .300 Winny loves 190gr Interlock bullets, these bullets are devastating on game and they reatain their weight beautifully. Also shoot the 168gr VLD's and 165gr accubonds, great accuracy with the VLD's and great penetration with the Accubonds.
Although the VLD's are marketed as longrange target bullets, they perform well on game. They perform better than Sierra matchkings IN MY RIFLES when we do longrange shooting up to 700m. They even let inaccurate rounds such as the 30-06 shine. My favourite bullet to shoot is the 190gr VLD from my 300Winny. This is the best longrange combo I have ever shot. These bullets are real longrange bullets and they live up to their reputation.
I know there may be better bullets for the job, but these are the bullets that performs best ( accuracy and velocity ) in MY RIFLES.
Very curious to hear what you guys shoot.

Re: Which bullets do you use?
i love sierra 180 gr game kings @ 2600 fps in the 303 for medium ranges on small to medium game and 215gr rhinos at 2250fps in the bush for bigger game. When i get a 243 i would probibly stick to sierra for varmints, springbuck and blesbuck. When i get a 375 i would go whith 250gr sierra for long range, downloaded hornady or pmp 300gr in the bush and 380gr rhinos for buf

9,3x62 = Norma Oryx 285gr - excellent expansion and penetration from this affordable premium bonded bullet - weight retention around 99%.
.308 Target and SD = Hornady 155gr Amax - very accurate, affordable, recommended by Doc Roberts for SD and used in Hornady TAP ammo.
.308 Hunting = Hornady 165gr Interbond - very accurate, affordable, bonded bullets.
.30-06 Hunting = Barnes TTSX 165gr - expensive, very tough.

Re: Which bullets do you use?
I use 220gr Rhino's in my .30-06 at an estimated 2400fps. One inch groups at 100yds and good penetration. (Had to shoot other hunter's wounded blue wildebeest, raking shot, entry high on hind right leg, exited behind left shoulder).

Re: Which bullets do you use?
Unfortunately down here in the Kaap we're more beggars than choosers as many of the shops don't have a large variety of stock (if any, see PMP thread) or the stock that they do have is priced through the stratosphere (see various threads). This year I've hunted quite a bit with Sierra's 165gr HPBT GK, which have accounted for two feral pigs, two springbok, two bushbuck and a duiker and each animal went down big-time with one shot. These bullets are amazingly accurate and perform more like a Match bullet than a Game bullet. I've posted a different thread about this bullet as I can't quite work the bullet's performance on game out. To say that they expand explosively is an understatement, these bullets are like bullet-shaped grenades. All of the exit wounds are immense and most look like a cookie-cutter hole and in one case, a neck shot on a duiker, it well... let's just say that the shoulder mount won't be happening anymore as we have yet to find the head. I have yet to retrieve more than the jacket of one bullet. Effective but weird...
Next month I'm going to be hunting eland, wildebeest, blesbok and mountain reedbuck and even-though these bullets are effective killers, I'm hesitant to use this bullet on anything larger (and more costly!) than springbok. I'm probably going to use PMP's 180gr Pro-Amm or Sierra's 180gr GK, both of which are both tried and tested.

I agree with you. It seems as if we (or I?) have been fed a constant diet of "premium bullet and nothing else" by hunting journo's. It think premium bullets a must have if penetration are important (large game) and your choice of calibre is marginal (i.e. .30-06 on eland).

Re: Which bullets do you use?
i have killed many game cleanly whith standard hunting bullets. I even once had to kill 20 head of crazy catel running on the n4 whith standard 55gr fmjs in a 5.56. The thing is stick to standard velocitys and dont try to brake heavy bones and u wil be fine. I would take on a eland whith my 303 but i would stick to 215gr rhinos and chose my shot. In fast calibers like the 300s,7mm mags... It is beter to stick to premium graders. This begs the question,do we need these fast rifles for normal hunting considering that they recoil more, use more powder, waste more meat and need premium graders?

Re: Which bullets do you use?
I am so sick and tired of paying stupid prices for imported ammo, so I only use Rhino and Claw bullets.
300gr and 350gr for my 375H&H
180gr for my 30-06
90gr for my .243
45gr for my .223
I support the local guys and their bullets work really well for me. I hunt all the time and have excellent results with both Claw and Rhino.
