A 42-year-old Bloemfontein policeman apparently killed his wife before turning the firearm on himself. The bodies of Colonel Daniel Kganyane and his wife, Matshele (38), were found in their bedroom in their house in Turflaagte yesterday. Police spokesperson Rulene Kühn said the policeman was part of the provincial flash unit, which is responsible for handling firearm licences.

She said Matshele had suffered a bullet wound to her chest while Daniel had a bullet wound to the head.Kühn said a 9mm firearm was found on the scene. She said ownership of the firearm is yet to be established. The couple had two kids. Kühn said the kids were not at home during the incident.This follows just months after two family murders involving police officers in Bloemfontein.

In April 2011, Sergeant John Filander (35) shot his girlfriend, Jacoba Christie (35), and then himself in Bloemspruit, Bloemfontein. Just weeks later, another policeman, Daniël Olifant (40), murdered his girlfriend, Shirley Scharneck (39), and her two kids at their house in General de Wet, Bloemfontein, before committing suicide.

In May this year, a policeman, Edward Itumeleng Kgatlane (40), shot his wife, Maggie (38), and then turned the gun on himself. Major-General Khehla Sithole, acting provincial commissioner in the Free State, reminded police officers yesterday that they could get professional help as part of the employee wellness programme if they needed to talk.
