    Default Enough Energy?

    Hi,

Will a .308 165gr spitzer type, flat base, bonded bullet, leaving a 22" barrel at 2560fps, have enough energy to kill blesbuck at 300m?

Target area is heart / lungs

    Your opinions please

    Thx

Easily, i have a 22" barrel on my 308 with a bit more speed and it has taken Gems-buck at 300m so you wont have a problem.

Depending on bullet make it should have anything from 1400 to 1700 ft-lbs at that speed, and that would kill any blessie with proper shot placing.

People get sniped and killed at 1000 meters with more or less that combination you describe.

Same body weight and size etc as a blesbuck.

    Rough comparison but valid.

Chris, yes. Provided that you hit the vital areas. With all due respect, get a Blesbuck or Impala target, take it to the range and practice shooting at 300m. Try and simulate hunting conditions.

You might just be a crack shot, but this reply is aimed at 'newbies' that underestimate the degree of difficulty of actually hitting the vitals at such distance in real life.

Agree with Game Farmer, my brother lives in the Lowveld, and is a crack shot shooting equally good left or right.

Note, Lowveld hunting is 80-120m. He also does a lot of culling for a big game farm.

This year hunting in the highveld flats with shots ranging from 260-320m he struggled, so yes do practise those long range shots if it is not something you do regularly.

    Good luck and happy hunting.
