Default Community Policing - SAPS Reservist

    Hi all,

About a year ago I applied to become a SAPS Reservist at my local police station and have not heard from them since.

I did go there once but the head of reservist was not there so I talked with a WO and she said that apparently the SAPS is not recruiting anymore reservist until further notice.

    Is this true?
I really want to become a reservist and feel that I can contribute to my local police station, but they make it so difficult for me

    Any comments welcome.

    Thanks

As long as there is a valid reason, then I have no beef with them... but if they just giving me trouble because of my age/race/gender or something like that, then I would have a problem with that

As far as I know there has been a moratorium on the appointment of new reservists since September 2009. They are in the process of defining a new national instruction for reservists, this was supposed to be released on 1 October 2011 but the new date is now 1 Feb 2012.

This is based on hearsay and not actual facts.

There was a moratorium placed on recruitment a few years back. As CO correctly posted it is because they are waiting for the new NI to be approved. The NI dictates all matters relating to reservist governance - from recruitment to powers to uniform to disciplinary procedures etc. Nobody is sure when the Ni will be released, several dates for release have come and gone, and just as it looks final more amendments are done because senior officials cannot come to consensus on what it should look like.

The moratorium was lifted a while back, which was silly as the new NI had not been finalised. As such lifting the moratorium was pointless without clearly defined recruitment criteria.

You should never have been recruited. Period.

However, please don't get demotivated etc. Once the NI is finalised, then you can apply formally and undergo all the tests (including psychometrics etc). We need all the quality recruits we can get.

PM me if you want more info etc.

    Thanks for all the info,

Why all the sudden fuss about becoming a reservist?

In short, the wonderful brainchild that is Category D happened. Now they are trying to rectify their mistake. But that is just my opinion.

It basically means recruiting more people as reservists, with less training, in less time, with less entry requirements. End result? 3/8th of an army of criminals being supplied with guns, power, and uniforms directly by the government. Another 3/8th of an army of people that think they will become a permanent police member and skip police college by becoming a reservist. The remaining 2/8th of them, all with good intentions, all with inadequate training to do a dangerous job properly, some with less than enough intelligence/education to spell let alone write a docket properly. Once again, my opinion only.
