Car owner shoots, kills thief

Johannesburg - A man was shot dead and another was shot and wounded while the two were allegedly stealing a car in Rockville, Soweto on Saturday morning, Gauteng police said.

Captain Mpande Khoza said the men allegedly broke into a property and were rolling the car out of the yard, when the owner woke up.

"The men didn't run away. They tried to threaten the man, and said they were going to kill him," Khoza said.

"The owner went inside the house and then came back with a gun. He shot both men."

Khoza said the 22-year-old man was fatally wounded, while the other man jumped in the car and drove away.

He later crashed into a nearby house.

The man then called a family member to come and take him to hospital, Khoza said.

Police arrived at house and arrested the family member. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Khoza said the man would appear in court after he recovered.
