Check out http://www.centuryarms.com/receivers.htm for a simple explanation.

As I understand it, the R1 is a metric type II receiver. This receiver type was introduced by FN in 1961-62 and gave the FAL its most visually appealing look with its distinctive lightening cuts. www.dsarms.com is the source for this info.

    The R1 is metric.

Mags are different and not interchangeable.

Front sight ears are different too, amongst other things.

The threads on imperial guns are, wait for it, imperial.

Do we see any of the imperial ones around SA?

There are a few of the Israeli ones we got during the embargo days which are imperial.

Ah, I've seen one of those, didn't realise they were imperial though. I also believe that a few L1A1's were issued north of our borders, I wonder if any of those made it into SA?

I looked into it, apparently not all Israeli FALs are imperial!

Im sure some L1A1's made the Beitbridge 500.

I have seen one (metric) FAL that apparently made that run.
