Re: Hunting load For .44 Mag
Hi guys. I hope this thread is still avalible, would the loads posted be suitable for an Astra 6 inch barrel. And dose anyone have any load data for 300gr Nosler JHP. I want to use this for back up in the bush against things that bite, I recon its better than a .45acp as back up. Thanks David.

Re: Hunting load For .44 Mag
Hi David
I am sure that the loads would be fine in your 6" Astra. Just apply all the safety rules and checks that you would when you are developing any handloads. (Also note the difference made by the primer LP vs MLP).
I do not have data on the 300grn JHP, as the std 44Mag data from SomChem/Reinmetall only lists up to 250grn FPJs:

Sorry for not being of more help.
Sweet

Re: Hunting load For .44 Mag
I sold my Blackhawks so I only have the Astra left. It seems to prefer the 300 gr load I mentioned on page 1 over the 240 or 200 gr loads. But your gun might differ.

Re: Hunting load For .44 Mag
Hi WRM.
What Astra do you have and you say it loves the 300gr? Interesting, as I have heard (and this happens when one lends out one's ears) that the Astra is a bit "soft" for the 300gr.
I have bought a 44 Astra just recently and should have the applicatoin shortly. I would prefer to shoot the 300gr, but do not want to push the gun to the max, rather shoot if for years to come!
Also, do you have any pics of your gun and did you put any grips on? Sorry for the Q's, very new to the BIG handgun scene

Re: Hunting load For .44 Mag
It's just your basic Astra 44 Mag. The one at the bottom in this blog post http://www.retro.co.za/blog/?p=1156
You can make a gun blow up with just about any weight bullets. A maximum load with a 200gr bullet will pound a gun just like a maximum load with a 300gr bullet. Factory 300gr velocity is 1350fps, my load (14gr S221) runs 1140. In my book that's a mild load. It puts six shots in an IDPA target head at 50m, which is not Freedom Arms accuracy but I can live with it.
Mine came with the rubber grips.

Re: Hunting load For .44 Mag
Far too many people under estimate the Astra. Guys in the states that own them, love them. I have a ss Astra inox 38spl snubby that I have fired many hundreds of rounds through, some quite HOT. The little Astra shows no signs of wear and never skips a beat.
