    Default 460 or 500 S & W

    HI Guys,

Have ordered a X Frame from Nic Yale for delivery in February\March.
Cant decide if should take one in 460 or 500 S & W.
Help please 460 is nice because can fire 460, 454 casull and 45 LC .
But 500 can shoot up to 500grain bullets (will be great to shoot a buff or elephant with a revolver ), and of course case is bigger and hole is bigger. Just worried about availability (and cost) of reloading components and supposed horrendous recoil

    Whats your opinions?

    Greg

You know you want the 500, why go for less?

Go for the .460 then in a few months, you will wonder what if and , then you will buy the 500 anyway.

    No problem

    Wiki says 44 Magnum (which scares a lot of people) 340gr bullet, 1530 fpe. 454 Casull, 335gr bullet, 1900 fpe. 460 S&W, 360gr bullet, 2885 fpe. 500 S&W, 350gr bullet, 3030 fpe.

So it's only about double the energy of the 44 Mag :-)

Obviously, components are going to be difficult to get. I'd say import a mold, get someone to cast bullets for you.

Compared to getting the licence, making ammo is the least of your hassles :-)

I would recommend the 460 over the 500. While it is possible to get both, the 460 will be easier to get ammo for.

I would also recommend looking at the guns in person and then deciding. XVR has hunted with his and can tell you the effectiveness of his 460. Let me know if you would like to come by the office at some point to view the cannons

Brass will be the killer. Whatever you buy, organise a few hundred brass as well.

Dies are easy to source, even if not in stock locally.

I assume bullets are standard sizes, .452 and .500 . Big selection of both, locally.

Should be impressive with Impala solids.

I originally wanted the 500 because bigger is best, when S&W came out with the 460S&W we looked into it and decided it was the better calibre, for local reloading anyway.
You will need to get cases imported for either, but bullets are easier to come by for the 460 than the 500.
Frontier make a 300gr, 360gr and 390gr CMJ bullet, i use the Frontier 300gr for mucking around on the range and when I go hunting i use a Hornady XTP 300gr.
I load the 300gr Frontier bullets with 35gr S265 and get 1500fps and the 300gr XTP I put 38gr S265 and push them to 1750fps.
The recoil is managable, my S&W M29 is more unpleasent to shoot with full house Norma ammo.

I think Nic Yale has factory ammo for both calibres.
