GARNETT/ GARRETT SHOTGUN
Hi Guys, can anyone help me with more information on the above shotgun, please? It's a double side by side, and built sometime in the late 1800's. On the License it says it's a GARNETT, but the Barrel (which is quite used, it looks more like GARRETT, I'd like to find out where it was built, approximate value, & whether or not I can used modern shells with it.
thanks Gerald

Re: GARNETT/ GARRETT SHOTGUN
This is the sole reference I could find to either name where a double shotgun was concerned...nice old gun pictured here but I have NO idea if it is anything like yours...corrie or others here should, however

Re: GARNETT/ GARRETT SHOTGUN
Gerald, I will not be home before January to do some research on Frank Garret.
We will need photos of the gun and the proof marks on it to know more about it. But the chances are very good that it is chambered for 2 1/2" cartridges. The problem is that 70mm cartridges will fit in the chamber. When you shoot it the cartridge will open into the forcing cone and this will create pressures high enough to destroy your gun and possibly hurt you.

Re: GARNETT/ GARRETT SHOTGUN
We went pigion shooting a 2 weeks ago with it, used ammo with a low load, just in case... it was wonderfull, the old man works like a charm. The most fun I had in years :-) If only I could find out what this was worth.

Re: GARNETT/ GARRETT SHOTGUN
The short answer is "not much". There were tens of thousands of gunmakers around the beginning of the 1900's. Only a very small number of those produced firearms which were regarded as being of very high quality and which are sought after today. The vast majority are worth very little at all in today's world.
