Default 550 Paracord to hang hammock

    Hi guys,

Am going camping on Thursday and wanted to ask here before I go out and buy some paracord if anyone has had any experience in hanging hammocks with 550 paracord?
Does it work? Recommended? Any other cheap alternatives and places to buy?

    Thanks

Look up a company named 'Pentagon Fibres' in ElandsFontein JHB. They manufacture all types of rope/cord etc

Sure they do but couriers cost so why spend extra to courier something that someone in CT supplies?

Anyways Southern Ropes replied and said they recommend a polypropelene braid of 10mm which comes to R6.00 per meter excl vat. That's more expensive than the paracord but will probably last longer in hanging the hammock than the paracord will. Only thing I'm concerned about is that it is also probably more bulky than the paracord, how much I don't know, will see when I go to the shop tomorrow or thursday...

I hang my hammock with plain old ski-rope (hammock made from ski-rope too), work fine if you tie the knots correct for easy release - it does pull quite tight from the weight in the hammock. Hanged mine last week for 10 days while camping up North and it was the spot during the very warm midday hours!!!! Except at times I was making plans to hang it in the resorts swimming pool....permanently!!

Would stay clear of 550 paracord. It's not very hard wearing and our sun kills it in record time. Even a double or triple loop will still break in short order. I know ...I use Hennessy Expedition hammocks and I have learned to stay clear of 550 cord.

I agree with the 10mm polypropylene. It gets the job done. By the time you have enough 550 not to break, it will weight more than the poly 10mm rope.

Of course flat nylon webbing does a great job (50mm wide at Makro) It rolls up small, protects the trees and is super strong. This is my first choice

Just to wind Skaaphaas up even more, any Capies looking for A class webbing, paracord, velcro and lots of shit to make up your own shit, try out CD Fox.

    http://www.cdfox.co.za/index.php

Once you're done there you can take your stuff to Rocksole in the Bo-Kaap to stich to your specification.

I fail to see how the date matters if the info is relevant to what was discussed before, considering how often we drill people to use the search function before repeating a question. Should he have started a new thread? What is an acceptable timeframe to reply to?
