Got Muzzle Loader, So What Now..?
Hi guys..
I have just bought a Traditions Vortek 50cal in-line. As this was totally spur of the moment, I have a few questions... I have searched Gunsaaait on the competency issues and gather that I need to do a proficiency test and then apply for my competency like any other gun. That I understand, but not the powder permit thing. One oke has told me to get a deregulation certificate from a gunsmith etc..? I this necessary? Do I need a BP permit if I have a Muzzle Loader competency? Please could anyone help out. Thanks!

Re: Got Muzzle Loader, So What Now..?
I needed the certificate aswell. Need it for when you go to "explosives" for the BP permit. This is not issued by CFR, but the explosives division of the police. Competency is "to use the gun" and is issued by the CFR. The BP permit is to store the powder. I've been told you will not get the BP permit, without competency now. Check with your local explosives guys.

Michaelrp, were in NW are you located?
Anycase, you need the deregulation certificate from a gunsmith in order to apply for a black powder permit. Make sure that the gunsmith mentions that your muzzle loader uses 209 primers for ignition.
This document on our website explains the BP application process in detail:
http://www.flintandmusket.co.za/pdf/app.pdf
The application form can be found here:
http://www.flintandmusket.co.za/pdf/bppapplication.pdf
The BP permit allows you to buy, store, transport and use an explosive called "black powder". It also allows you 1000 units of percussion caps. This includes 209 primers for use in your Vortek.
Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Re: Got Muzzle Loader, So What Now..?
Hi guys, sorry to hijack the thread but my question is inline with the original topic. I'm looking at buying a muzzle loader and my cousin has his competency and powder permits and such. With regard to carrying a muzzle loader without competency, can I legally transport the firearm to his farm and back without having a competency?

You have until june to get a competency so I think you're still allowed to own a bp gun without it until then but not allowed to have powder and primers on you without a bp permit. If you have completed competency training and proove that you have applied for competency and put it all together for your bp permit app your permit will be issued and valid untill Jan 2013.

Btw those guys at explosives are great when it comes to turnaround time you'll only wait 1-3 weeks for your bp permit to arrive, wish the cfr was like them
