    Default RE: BUILDING A 375 ON COMMERCAIL MAUSER K98 ACTION

    I am wanting to build a Custom 375. Though I will only be able to do it in stages. I was thinking about buying a Mauser rifle just for the action and then go from there. What caliber should I buy?

    In what ways will it be custom?

    Will you be building it i.e. machining the barrel, fitting sights etc.

    You would need to check the action for wear on the bolt lugs, the bolt face. Would it not be an option to buy a new action?

    Having been in a similar position I eventually decided that a CZ 550 magnum action made the most sense cost and it is already set up for 375. You can buy the action from the agents. A standard mauser action is really too short, it can be modified but not ideal at all.A magnum mauser action is expensive or unobtainable.New mauser magnum actions can be as much as 40k. I also eventually concluded that it made a lot of sense to buy a basic cz rifle and have a new stock made and any metalwork done. The action and barrel are good on their own but action, sights can be improved.

    The choices have expanded :-

    If for casual hunting I would even look at push feed and not a K98.

    1.) 375 H&H Buy existing longer action (P14 or P17) with controlled feeding.
    2.) 375 Ruger Buy Howa rifle or Howa barrelled action. (Very good buy if price is an issue)

    Only if this is to be a guide or PH rifle will I specify controlled feed.

    Thanks for the feed back. I am so torn on what to buy and how to license my guns. At this stage I have exceeded the 4 gun limit. I do have dedicated hunter and sports shooter status. I would like a 375 with a mauser type action. At this stage the choices I have is as follows:

    1. Buy Mauser Magnum Action and build rifle from Scratch (very expensive);
    2. Purchase 550 magnum action and build rifle (expensive);
    3. Buy CZ550 in 373 change stock, safety, polish action possibly add new sights and sling mounts ( quite expensive);
    4. Buy a Ruger 375 H&H (getting there);
    5. Buy Ruger 375 ruger (not to bad);

    I like the 375 ruger as I am not a PH I probally will only ever get to shoot a Giraffe, Eland or maybe Hippo all within SA borders. So I don't really have to worry about ammo getting lost. I also reload so that also helps. I like the styling of the 375 ruger so I would just need to buy a scope and mounts. Okay I have convinced my self to purchase a 375 ruger.

    You can currently buy a Zastava.375 H&H for R11 000 at Formalito. I saw the add in the latest SAJWBV/SAHGHA magazine. It has the mauser type action, correct calibre and you can then customise at your hearts content.

    The Ruger 375 Howa was selling for under R6000. That leaves a lot of change up to R11000. It has a short action and the "short magnum" case allows for better performance by 100fps than the 375HH. I own a 375HH but will seriously consider the 375 Ruger if it is my first 375 that I am buying.

    If you go for the Ruger made rifle, according to their website, the rifle comes with scope rings included in the price.
