A young black wildebeest bull shot for staff rations this morning. I used a .416 rem mag with 400gr SBC bullets. Shot was taken at ±150m. While this rifle/sight/bullet combination is not ideal for hunting black wildebeest it is a good way for me to maintain familiarity with my big bore, it also makes the hunt a lot more challenging.

Thanks Messor. It is an Aimpoint micro H1 with a 2moa dot.

    Hi T

As you know I was always planning on putting one on my 338 for short range pig/bush work, I do have rails with QD mounts currently, but life happens and and.
I was just trying to picture in my mind what the 2MOA dot looks like on a wildebeest at 150m.

On wildebeest size game the dot works well enough to confidently place a shot in the vitals out to ±200m. On springbok sized game 100m would be the maximum for me. While a 2moa dot should cover a 3" circle at 150m it doesn't quite work that way in practice, as the brightness of the dot get turned higher, the dot appear to increase in size.

Also, you need to get used to the fact that there is no magnification, this is especially bothersome in low light and in deep shadow. I think a hunter familiar with open sights will transfer to a red dot easier than a hunter who has only ever used a telescope.

This is an unpleasant time of the year to hunt, it is too hot and you are very limited to what you can shoot, with virtually every female having a lamb or a calf and fully grown males being potential trophies. This leaves sub-adult animals and broken horned males. However being forced to be out in the veld really early does allow one to view beautiful sunrises and conduct stalks before sunrise. The time lapse between the two photos are 12 minutes (05:36 and 05:48).
