Googled this "bear banger" and from what I can see it kinda resembled a pencil flare. Am I correct?

I have never heard of bear bangers before and had to google it.

Can you not simply use fireworks like a widow maker or something?

The gun shop in Sandton City used to sell them, I got "refills" from them!

You can get Bear Bangers, aka Pencil Flares at any Boating shop that sells Marine Safety equipment. DO NOT carry it "cocked" if you have a flare attached and not ready to fire. I've heard Bear shit may also work so they don't smell you.

I only ever saw them in Botswana. They have their uses but they can be a seriously lousy double edged sword. I saw them used once where they made matters much worse
