Warthog Sharpeners

I just have to commend Warthog on their excellent product support. I dropped my sharpener and one of the bushing broke. Send them a mail via their website and received a full set of four bushings within days. Free, no questions asked.
Don't get that kind of service very often.

I think they're V-Sharp thing sucks because they do the following to your edge:



And no matter how you turn it:







It is fine for some steels, but re-profiling takes forever, it increases the primary edge significantly and after a while you will have to regrind or thin out the shoulders of the edge. Buy a good benchstone setup and be done with it. My dad bought a warthog. He hates the thing. I have to re-profile his kitchen knives constantly and thin them out in order for the warthog to work effectively. If you have expensive knives. Dont bother.

HOWEVER, their benchstone setup works and their V-Sharp is better then those pull through crap.

Compare the edge to one sharpened on good diamond benchstone:

I worked at a sportsstore for a while that sold these. Experienced similar results on my EDC knife.

Suppose on a knife that has a broad blade like a clearver it MIGHT work. But otherwise no thanks.

I prefer my Lansky kot with the guiderods. Completely idiotproof and makes my knife ridiculously sharp.

Personally, no. Pull through sharpeners do not give you the versatility to sharpen a knife to suite your needs, they cannot thin out the primary edge, it is...for a lack of terms, a lazy mans approach to sharpening IMO.

If you want a sharp knife get a Japanese water stone and find someone who can teach you to use it.

In my 1st job, years ago, my boss was Japanese. His hobby was sharpening Katana's. He taught me how to.
I found out later he was a Master Katana or Samurai sharpening smith.

He told me " There is no such thing as a sharp knife, fast ". It took him forever to teach me to slow down. I wanted a sharp knife, fast.

People from all over the world sent Katanas to him to be sharpened and polished. For what he charged them for the job he certainly didn't need to work at an electronics company.
