Comp and Lic or comp only?

Good morning again fellow gunsiters.

I have a simple question today that i hope sumone can answer for me.

I have most of my documentation ready no to go face the DFO for my SD firearm.

Someone told me last night that i must apply for license and competency and the same time.

I previously understood that you can only purchase a firearm after you got the comp card?

Can sumone be so kind as to clarify this for me.

You can just apply for the competency if you like.

I applied for both, got both within 11 months. They just hold on to the firearm application until the competency clears, then (in my case) it took 2 months from that for the license.

I also heard it might speed up the process if you do both at the same time, I'm not sure if thats true, but I don't think it will hurt either. The local DFO has to do some work on the application before it gets sent away, so why not just get both out of the way.

Just a Hint - If you submit extra documentation, make sure the pile can be split in 2: Competency file and New Licence file...

DFO at Lyttleton Police station,Centurion did my safe inspection last week.
Lyttleton Police station produced a list per area and are doing this per area now..
They have been instructed by headquarters to urgently process all applications for new firearms. (They Received this 2 weeks ago)
Pressure is being applied to SAPS by various groups indicating how long applications for new firearms are outstanding and how much are thus in storage at various dealers.
I asked about applying only for my wifes competency and was told that would be the last applications to be processed (ie - no firearm licence applied for)

I did my competancy application together with my firearm application. Like those before me have stated, the cops allow for that. If i recall correctly, you have to place finger prints on both applications, thus its better to get it over and done once.

the risk involved is that if your competancy is denied for some reason, you will have spent money on a deposit for a gun that you will never get.

Bottom line is this: You can do both competancy together with licence application or you can do them separately (as per the law). Its just that this person told you that you "have" to apply for those together because that is what favours the cops and makes their balls lighter ;D ... The cops will naturally "bully" you into doing what suits them and not what the law states.

Either way you do it is fine.

I have never put down a deposit on a gun from a dealer. All of the dealers I have ever done business with require that you pay full price, then you get the application forms.

When i bought a piece, I signed a piece of paper which had some fine print on it. Read that fine print on yours. My fine print stated that you lose 15% of the total price of the gun and the rest is refunded. But it might be different at your gun dealer.

If you are buying second hand guns then you might be able to convince them to allow you to pay a deposit.
