Why do the police destroy firearms?

Surely it can be a good source of funding for the police if they sell those firearms to gun shops or legal owners?

In a perfect world with no corruption etc it can work , worth a shot at least.

They just destroyed 900 firearms in Brits , at R 1000 a firearm thats R 900 000 and that can buy a few police vehicles or train and outfit many reservists...
Also 900 x competency and license fees is a lot of income

i was on the site when the gun's where the first batch of gun's where distroyed...SAPS did get paid..even if it was per kg and as scrap metal..
