Farm Attacks - Will they listen?
National police commissioner Riah Phiyega must declare farm murders a priority crime, civil rights group AfriForum has said.
It also wanted the commissioner to establish specialist units to deal with rural safety, AfriForum deputy CEO Ernst Roets said in a statement today.

Re: Farm Attacks - Will they listen?
Fat chance. It is mos just another form of crime, why must it be a priority? This fight has been fought and lost before. Much better if farmers start taking their own safety a lot more seriously. (Yes, I know a few very much do.)

Re: Farm Attacks - Will they listen?
I have heard that the old Commando system was decently effective at combating this (not sure exactly how it worked and results, etc). Maybe government should look to create a similar kind of system? But then again they would go on about logistics and stories about arming the civilians. Guess people need to arm themselves then.

Re: Farm Attacks - Will they listen?
This government under the ANC will never, ever, ever, EVER reinstate the commando system or rearm the farming community willingly. The only realistic option is for farmers and their families to arm themselves and get the required training to effectively defend themselves.
Things the government cares waaaay more about than rural security:
1. New plane for the prez.
2. New wives for the prez.
3. New Kids for the prez.
4. New cars for MP's and Ministers.
5. Nationalising EVERYTHING
6. Destroying education, healthcare, the police, municipalities, basic services...list goes on.
Basically, everything and anything is more important than protecting a bunch of overpriviledged white landowners who ride the backs of the oppressed majority who lack economic freedom in our time.
Time to face the facts: They do not, have never, and will never care.

Re: Farm Attacks - Will they listen?
I don't entirely agree with that. Getting a license for Self Defense, apart from being a constitutional right, is quite straight forward if motivated correctly. I've also never heard of a government being overthrown by handgun-wielding revolutionaries: slightly heavier artillery would generally be required for that feat. Nevertheless, unless the constitution of this country is drastically altered beyond recognition, the farming communtiy reserve the right (and responsibility) to equip themselves as needed. The bigger problem is changing the attitudes of the very farmers themselves to actually admit that the situation is a serious one: everybody complains about the farm murders, but very few are actually willing to try and make themselves and their homes safer.

Re: Farm Attacks - Will they listen?
Something I heard on TV the other day. Think it was an ad for CSI New York. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. But there are all these little islands of farmers that do not bother to arm themselves. I have no idea how you can change their minds...
But they need to get armed. I would like to see the life expectancy of a criminal drop to 0. They are rubbish anyhow!

Re: Farm Attacks - Will they listen?
I live in a farming community and can say from talking to various farmers that personal security is not!!! high on their list of priorities. Personal security is limited to hunting rifles locked away in the safe or a revolver covered in dust on top of the linen cupboard, I'm not saying they are all like that, but the attitude is one of "that doesn't happen around here". I dont know how that sort of mindset can be changed.

Re: Farm Attacks - Will they listen?
Having lived on a farm and spending a lot of time on farms all over the country, you should all bear in mind that farmers farm because they enjoy the peaceful solitude of the farming lifestyle. Farmers are not warmongers nor is arming themselves what they aspire to. The only way to protect them is for government to offer them security solutions.
