Thread: Ammo inflation

    Default Ammo inflation

In the course of two years the price of 9mm short (the ammo I buy) has experienced 300% inflation- that competes with Zimbabwe! A key factor has to be the massive increase in the price of lead. Also I believe as the FCA cracks down on firearm use less ammo is purchased eroding economies of scale. Any other inputs I have missed? Colusion?

I think that the ammo price inflation is a global thing.

Look at the prices that the raw metals did...these items went on a steep increase affecting the imput cost of ammo and thus part of the reason ammo prices went throught the roof.

Ammo did get more expensive here in germany - but by far not 300%.

    I paid 20.000 Rand (155 Euro+s) for 1000 Geco´s in 9 Para

    Sorry, you´re right.

Is too late in the week for simple calculations.

I assume 1 Euro equals something to 13 rand - it was below 10 when I was in SA in August 2007 - as far as i remeber...

    regards

Lead, copper and brass prices have come down sharply now and no decrease at all in the price of ammo. This is all supply and demand driven...pure and simple. In the US, new ammo sales are at or above a consistent 1 Billion rounds a month and have been since the first of the year, after more than a Billion and a half round sales in Dec. 08. 9mm 'short' (.380acp) ammo has gone up more than most due to the introduction and record sales of the newer .380 pocket pistols such as (mainly) the Ruger LCP and the fact that until lately the .380 was not a caliber that was a top seller, thus US ammo manufacturers usually made only one 'run' a year of it. Foreign ammo took up some of the slack when the US ammo sold out, but even that has been difficult to find.

In the states, they are now seeing some increased availability of both rifle and handgun ammo, but it is a long way from being back to 'normal' and prices are still high as a kite.
