Used old artillary shells

A friend of mine was clearing out a barn on a farm, and found some old brass artillary shells, used in some conflict somewhere, which was probably part of a collection.
What are the legal issues with these type shells and "used old ammunition parts?

Does he keep it, sell it, hand it to the cops?

If it is deactivated – that is to say not "live" – there should be no legal issues. You see quite a few of these things around. But send me some pictures – send me a private mail if necessary – and I will check in with the ammunition collectors for you and see if we can identify what it is. It may be something of particular interest. Detailed photographs will be necessary.
