Johannesburg - Three men have been arrested on Wednesday for the armed robbery of a supermarket in Diepkloof, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said the police acted on a tip that led to the questioning and arrest of the supermarket's manager.

Police interrogated the manager, leading to the arrest of two other men, 30 and 33, in Dobsonville.
The three were arrested for an armed robbery that took place on Sunday.

"During the robbery, it is alleged that the suspects surprised the security guards as they came to pick up money. The security guards were held at gunpoint and one was robbed of his firearm before the suspects fled in a minibus," Mogale said.

Further questioning led police to a house in Zondi where they found seven unlicensed firearms. Three rifles - an AK-47, R5 and LM 5 - three 9mm pistols and a .357 Magnum.

Mogale said police were investigating to see whether they can link the confiscated firearms to other crimes committed in the Johannesburg area.

The three men will appear in court on charges of armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.
