Re: Jackal hunt experience
Hi Guys, from my own experience, in the past 2 years I have not lost one lamb or calf to Jackal, previously I would lose up to 15% to Jackal, Rooikat and Leopard, The lambing/calving period is very short and they are easy prey for a very short time. my solution, go to the local chicken farm and get a bakkie full of dead chicken, dump them on the farm and let the naturally lazy predators have a party. No lambs lost and safely in the herd, the jackals carry on with there natural prey. Rooikats are another story, I try to keep some BG chickens in the coral for tick control, impossible, I have an old Rooikat tom that has a chicken for supper every night, I have sat all night waiting for him, no show, but go to the coral later there is the dead chicken with it back taken out, the only times I have ever seen him has been when I have been coming home, without a rifle, but I don't know if I would shoot him, he's part of the family now.

If you do decide to shoot him, give me a shout. I might be able to help.

Re: Jackal hunt experience
Guys I have farmed sheep for years and only things have worked, even better in tandem in fact - Culling and Anatolian Sheperds, those dogs do amazing work is trained correctly. The fact that both or either are needed is unquestionable in the reality of todays world!!!

Anotolains work short term only. They usually end up running away or survive by eating sheep from other flocks. We have been through this so many times with big scale sheep farmers.Infact just this weekend two different farmers in Cradock verified this without even knowing eachother.

Re: Jackal hunt experience
I hear they don't take kak from a jackal, many farmers in our area are now putting them amongst their herds.
