.223 vs 6x45
Any takers who wish to depart knowledge of these calibres, pros and cons?
I am looking to obtain a small calibre rifle in this class for small game, eg. duiker, springbok and ribbok?
Which would be the preferable round?
Cheers for the week end!!

I have no experience reloading either.
However,
Opinion: Would prefer the Six because of the heavier bullet availiable.Recent studies show that 1 out of every 3 liberals are just as dumb as the other 2

I think your choice would depend largely on the terrain you are going to hunt those small animals in. If in the bush with short range shots being the norm then the 6 would be a better choice. If in open terrain with longer shooting distances then the 223's flatter trajectory may be a decided advantage on these small animals with small vital areas.

get the 6mm , you can do more with it . you also wont get farmers banning it from their farms .
the twist should be 1;10 to shoot 100gr bullets . hpy180

KuduVark
Come on and tell us why you are stuck on these two calibers...
Considering the avalability of so many other options...
Wee all may have one a few things in common..
The Rifles and guns that we perhaps should not have bought.. The better quality firearms wee should perhaps have waited for ?
Or am I just throwing a pebble into a frozen pool?

Re: .223 vs 6x45
Hi gidsie
I already own a .22lr and a .30-06.
The .30-06 I use with 180gr PMP factory ammo, but it is a bit of overkill on small game.
I do not go for big game like eland and buffalo, so I do not need a big gun.
A .243 is a bit hot and will cause too much damage if you shoot small game at close range.
The .223 or 6x45 is a bit of a compromise in that they can be used on small game at a distance and cause less meat damage at shorter distance.
Besides, my safe looks empty with only two rifles and well, I still have an opening in my legal quota of 4 fire arms, so why not get another.
Didn't you ever want something, just for the sake of wanting it??

Then go for the 6mm. The 223 tends to destroy meat at close range and most of the bullets for it are meant for varminting. The 6mm with the heavier bullets will be great in the bush because of the moderate velocity and you can get reasonable trajectories with the lighter bullets for the longer shots.

Re: .223 vs 6x45
The problem with the 6 x 45 is component availability. Any firearm dealer worth 2cent will stock .223 components and ammo. Try buying 6 x 45 ammo in the local putsonderwater kooperasie when you are hunting and need ammo.

Re: .223 vs 6x45
I also reckon 6mm although not knowing much about the calibre. Maybe you should consider the .243Win again. It is very popular and have become very versatile in a certain sense. With bullets from 55gr to 108gr and availible in premium configurations for the most part of this. Anyway, anything based on a .308 case is so many times worth the while. If your main concern is meat damage on smaller species, maybe shoot more, practice harder and become familiar with shooting head and/or neck shots on various distances.......just a thought!
