    Default CZ 550 416 RIGBY

    Gooday,

I have just purchased a CZ 550 416 Rigby. Could anyone who has the same rifle comment on how they have found it vs other makes.

Would a load of S385 91GR and a 400gr frontier or rhino bullet be regarded as to soft?

I would also like to find out if it is better to use S365 OR S385. Is it true that S385 would fill the case more than S365?

    Your assistance is much appreciated

    Thanks,

    Wesley

I loaded 88-89 gr of S365 on 400gr softs and solids.

IMO the CZ550 is a great gun!!!!

The bolts/actions are a little sticky, but a good gunsmith can make it smooth and 100% reliable.

I also have a CZ 550. Although with the short action. (7x57). After sending it to Chad @ Arms it is much better. He just tweaks and finishes the trigger and action off perfectly. Now all my new rifles go for trigger jobs and action polishing. It's standard practice now. He did wonders for my CZ .22lr trigger that felt like dragging a rock along a tar road. I love my CZ rifles!

Using Quick Load S365 gives speed of 2440fps with 400gr DGS. S385 gives 2400fps with better case fill of 96%. Case fill is 93% with S365. I think here you have to go with best accuracy and felt recoil to decide between the two. Powder consumption is 100% with S365 and 98% with S385. Please note that these figures are at max pressure to make comparison relative. You have to load to safe and accurate levels for your rifle setup.

Thank you for your reply. I would then assume that starting at the minimum load in somchems book using S385 and a 400gr bullet would be regarded safe to start off.

What size cleaning jag does the 416 use. I would imagine a .40 or .45 to give a snug fit?

One last question is it advisable to give a light or heavy roll crimp on seating the bullet at the crimp groove?

Thank you for all your help

The figures I gave before was just to compare the 2 propellants. Looking at Somchems manual 91gr will be a good start. I attach a print-out of the calcs for 91gr S385 below. You will see that speed is predicted at 50fps above that achieved by Somchem. This is going to depend on the burn rate of the propellant Lot you have and the internals of your rifle.
