The 'circle' is actually the cocking lever - not apparent in the thumbnails - unlike current ARs which have a two fingered lever behind and below the carry handle (if they have the latter).
One reason for rejection may have been the barrels. I have seen two with significant bulges around the mid point - if those happened during the trials then NOBODY is going to pass them. Remember that was in the good old days before contracts were given to the highest payer!

The War Museum has two in their collection and the AR10s are significant locally, other than Angola and Moz use, in that they were part of the trials that lead to the adoption of the FAL.

This is quite a fascinating story, does the museum have them on display?

There are quite a few of these Rifles in New Zealand,most of them "disappeared" in 992 with the adoption of stricter rules governing Military Style semi automatics.I don't know the source of these Rifles but the examples I have handled were once select fire but had been converted to semi automatic only.
