    The 'circle' is actually the cocking lever - not apparent in the thumbnails - unlike current ARs which have a two fingered lever behind and below the carry handle (if they have the latter).
    One reason for rejection may have been the barrels. I have seen two with significant bulges around the mid point - if those happened during the trials then NOBODY is going to pass them. Remember that was in the good old days before contracts were given to the highest payer!

    Am I right in assuming this cocking handle reciprocated when firing and also served as a forward assist?

    There are quite a few of these Rifles in New Zealand,most of them "disappeared" in 992 with the adoption of stricter rules governing Military Style semi automatics.I don't know the source of these Rifles but the examples I have handled were once select fire but had been converted to semi automatic only.
