Knife Sharpening
How do you chaps sharpen your knives?
I've tried freehand using a stone and managed to make quite a mess of the knife I was trying to sharpen. I really don't want to mess up another knife like this, although I would like to learn to do it this way properly.
What do you think if the difference systems like the Lansky rod guided system or the spyderco one?
Also are there any tricks to learning to sharpen freehand with a stone?

Re: Knife Sharpening
I use the spyderco sharpmaker and love it. Get a razor sharp edge. Not very coarse though, so for a new angle I use the lansky 3 stone system

MAB, can you not get it to the same degree of razor sharpness using the lansky?

I also battled until I used prestik to attach a protractor to my stone. makes it much easier to maintain a constant angle

Lansky, I even use it to sharpen Xacto blades.

Surely a protractor gets in the way? Also I can't quite see how it helps.

I love my lansky set with the guide rods. It dumbass easy to use and you can exchange the stones seperatly. Also availible almost everywhere. You won't be sorry.

Re: Knife Sharpening
Lansky is awesome. I've been using my set now for a few years and it's now time for a new one (think about 12 years of religious service). Other than that I use a Tormek system. Trust me when I say you've never seen a sharper blade that what the Tormek can produce. Slow-turning wet wheel with a leather polishing wheel on the other side of the system. Fully guided grinding and sharpening means it takes abou 15 minutes to get a dull-as-a-spoon knife up to shaving sharpness (and I have shaven with my Kershaw after using the Tormek before). It is an expensive system, yes, but if you consider that a good Lansky set costs up to R900 these days as well (excluding accessories and thingamabobs) the price tag isn't too bad. Also remember that is uses a cold, wet method of grinding, meaning NO damage on die blade is possible at all.

Re: Knife Sharpening
Thanks guys, Lansky doesseem to be the way to go. I would rather not have to buy two different systems if I can avoid it.
Toxxyc, that Tormek does look really nice, but 4k is quite pricey for my needs..
