Are we the only ones that read newsstand mags?

I personally use Mysubs. Have subscriptions for SA4x4, Home Handyman, Runners World. Getaway as well.

Haven't looked at newsstand yet, are they any good?

I dont use newsstand, i use Zinio.

They're all much the same really, but I do prefer newsstand because it's just easier.
The different apps don't all have the same mags, so I use Zinio when I have to.

I just got an issue of combat handguns on Newsstand.

I only find combat handguns for the iphone / ipod, where did you find the ipad version?

Search for combat handguns hd
It only appears if you search on the iPad, not if you search from an iPhone.
