Default Exchanging an older firearm for a different type/model.

    Hello Everyone.

As the topic reads. I am up to date with the new license/competency rules etc etc. BUT, I want to get a new firearm and replace my current one.
    How/Where/What/When?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.
    Jared

    Jareds

You have 2 options, 1. dispose of your current firearm and apply for the new one or 2. keep the one you have and apply for the second one. Motivation will have to be extra good if they are the same calibre.

So in short it's a new application eitherway.

    Oh boy....
I heard that it isn't that much of a mission!
Im going from a 9mm to a 40, so those are different!
Is it even worth the effort I wonder?

    Thanks.

I did it. Went from 380acp to 9x19. It works like this:

    1. You apply for the new licence. In your motivation you state that you would like to exchange your current gun for another (the new one). You put in why you need the gun and why its better suited than your previous gun. You tell them you are doing it this way so that you are sure you have a licence before you sell your old gun. Its still a full motivation like a normal one!
    2. If you are lucky they decide you can go ahead. They tell you to get rid of your current gun and send proof of this to them (CFR).
    3. The CFR then continues issuing your licence for the new gun.

So you will be without a gun for a while, but this way you don't sell your current gun before you are sure the new licence is issued.

    NOOOOOOO....

How long ago did you do yours? How long did it take?
Surely there is a faster/easier way?

    Thanks.

Well that is how mine went...and it was declined on my first attempt. I had to win it on an appeal! Took about two years, but the appeal added about 6 months. I suggest you phone the CFR (I know) and try get some clarity. Although the procedure was what I was told by them. I think the first guy that read my application did not understand what I was trying to do.

    Jared,

As far as I have it, the process that Shooter followed is the only for doing a exchange. You could try and get a Section 21 permit for the new firearm while you wait for the other process to complete.

    OK.
I was just under the impression that seeing as I have the current and up to date license - It would not have been such a mission.
I will speak to the Gunshop that I might be getting the firearm from, and see what they have to say...
    Ill keep you posted!
