Default X-type rifle bench rest bag, DI semi Y.

I wanted one of those X-Bags that you use for a rifle dead rest at the bench for some time now, as the ranges that I visit don't have adequate rests.

At R400 I just couldn't justify it, I mean it is a bag full of beads!

So I got the idea from a friend, and set to work on it:

Take an old pair of jeans. Cut the legs off, about 400mm from the bottom. Stich the bottoms closed. Stitch Velcro onto the other ends so that they can be opened and closed at will. Lay the two legs on top of each other, and stitch them together, lengthwise, all along the middle. Insert rice, beans, whatever, and close up the ends, and voila.

I cannot stitch, so I had that part done at a tailor. I used rice, which is actually a bit heavy. It will do for now, but looking for something more suitable. Cost: R150, which was a bit more like it.

What a totally excellent idea!! I'm so stealing this one from you Skaaphaas!!

What about using dried beans or Mielie kernels to fill the bags?

How did the velcro hold up?

Must. Find. Old. Pair. Of. Pants. ;)

Velcro is holding up well for now, but havent't used it in the range yet. (Time constraints!)

Mielie kernels or dried beans might work very well indeed. I just didn't have access to it at short notice. Let us know how they work for you!

Place the dried stuff in a plastic bag before you put it in the bench-rest bag. It does get wet (for whatever reason) and it then becomes a mess.

Survival gun rest! When SHTF happens, toss gun rest in the pot and cook some Tastic!

    Sorry.

I just happen to have an old pair of jeans in my possession. Consider this idea stolen. If I could have your permission to do so, obviously.

Come to think of it. I have been using a home made bench bag for years (not X bag, just flat bag).

It is made of an old heavy duty bank bag filled with coarse building sand. It isn't stuff full full, so that you can still manipulate the shape a bit.
