I got mine at GI Combat Supplies in Cape Town. Google them.

I travel a lot, local and internationally, and it remains my go-to bag.

Why don't you get yourself a medium Alice pack with an external frame. It's cheap enough to modify without breaking the bank and it's pretty comfortable.

I would definitely avoid the vests. In 1980 the army trialled the patt80 vest system and rejected it a just too hot and uncomfortable. If I remember correctly the system created a need for an extra 2L of water per day for decent hydration. Didn't get past trials at Oudtshoorn AFAIK. I donated my set to the War Museum where it is on display.

And the resulting 'Niemoller webbing' project brought us the Pre-pattern 83 and then the Pat 84 which were loads and loads better.

I found my Pre-pat 83 a month ago when clearing out my mom's house for sale. It is chocolate brown whereas the Pat 84 was more nutria, and was much lighter than the Pat 84 with more small pouches for grenades, etc. Also an internal map pouch on the left front.
