Depends what you want to do with the dog. If you want to use it for waterfowling only then it may be fine. At a guess I would think that you would battle to get your hands on good working stock in S.A. you would be better off looking for something else, if you are looking at hpr dogs then the cbr may not suit your needs. If however you want the dog because you just love the breed then that is a totally different scenario altogether - just get one. My 2c.

Nice, FatOldSun
Are those pics of your dog/s?
I met one on Vancouver Island, 3yrs ago - I think that I deeply offended the old dude who was walking it when I asked whether it was a lab cross. In my defence 6/7dogs on Vancouver Island are chocolate labs!

Re: Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Yes, indeed, it is my Dog. I've decided now to import to South-Africa, at great cost... it's a shame there is not more of these around, they love water, if you do not live by water, I do not see the point in having one. There is nothing more offending to a Chessie owner that calling it a LAB, I get that every day and I always get the same answer (I've known dogs all my life and I've never heard about CheasaPeake Bay Retrievers...) They are very intelligent dogs, that is what I like most of them. I can tell him to Sit/Stay and, by God, there can be 1000 people around him and he would not move... Amazing.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Retriever
I live by the seaside, they just love water, and trust me, they are 90% harder workers than labradors. Saying that, they are also good gundogs, thus a semi frozen river is not required, they are more than happy on land. Chessie's has got Webbed feet (I do not know how humans manages to breed these dogs with web feet), but they do, hence amazing swimmers...
