What do you guys recommend for general cleaning OUTSIDE the bore.

I use Hoppe's No. 9 Bore Cleaner for the bore but what about general cleaning (not lubing). Some say that Hoppe's Bore Cleaner is too strong for that and will damage the polymer frame and other parts.

    What do you guys use?

Yes. Inside and outside gun. Also inside and outside horse and inside and outside human. Ballistol might not be the best bore cleaner, but it is far from the worst. I would say about as good as Hoppe's. Cleans most grime and gunk and carbon, is a reasonable lube and good rust preventer. Plus it works well on wood and is also an antiseptic. Only down side is that it doesn't remove copper fouling.

It does remove copper, just slowly.

+1 for Ballistol. Works wonders. But add a little patience

So it does remove copper but just let it stand for a while and some extra scrubbing?

I have been trying a new cleaning regime for carbon, suggested to me by one of the really experienced guys I shoot F class with. He is also a national level bench rester over here.

50/50 mix of Penetrene oil and Hoppes no.9 - it is really good at softening & 'lifting' the carbon.

I have found that it really helps the more aggresive Boretech solvent work more effiecently if I use this mixture first.

Not sure if it has any affect on copper fouling as so far I have used it only on my F class rifle which has a match barrel and hardly ever has much copper fouling anyway.
