Default Re: Why does san parks use the R1

In the 1970s I was deployed in and around the Cunene river and Caloueqe Dam and had to cull numerous cattle that walked into our booby traps. We would go out inthe morning and see what had tripped the claymores and other devices. I always did the shooting - head shots at a few metres as the cattle would be just lying down and nor moving. Not one R1 bullet fully penetrated and exited the head. I have seen the impressive peneration on trees etc. but not so much on cattle skulls.

Indeed. I have once shot a warthog boar in the neck with a millspec 143gn FMJ bullet from an R1. The bullet did not exit. I would not try to use it on an angry ellie, not even from a helicopter.

No, out in the open. Shot was from his 3-O-clock side, bullet hit the neck vertebrae. The pig spun around a little before expiring.

Does Dzombo export to the U.S.? I'm definitely interested in trying some once I get the equipment to begin handloading.

I have asked the guys there at the KNP for further info - may take some time to receive a response, they are rather busy always, but I am sure Dzombo themselves or Peter Wells will be able to provide load data, I see Mr. Wells is involved with Dzombo from his recent post as per the above link.

I have send the photos to Paul, he may have more patience than me in trying to upload the photos here, but it looks exactly like the pics on their website and Facebook page for what it is worth.

What use would you have there in the US for a monolithic such as this if I may ask? Normal 308 FMJ has awesome penetration as it is through barriers, compared to .223 at least.
Were you ever able to get any additional info on the loads they use?

I second this, in the modern theater you are not only carrying your own gear on a patrol, which is already substantial. On a hot deployment, anyone that is not a specialist will usually carry an extra belt of 7.62 for the MG. Everyone does it with pleasure, on the off chance you run into a pissed of dude with a DSHK. Beside that, everyone usually carries between 180 to 300+ rounds of 5.56. With this comes body armour, kevlar, NVG's, assault pack, radios, food etc. When not mechanized, we carried 40-80kg depending on mission guidelines. If we had to carry the same in 7.62 plus a belt for the machine gunner and all the other gear, we would be considerably less maneuverable.
You can carry twice the amount of 5.56 when compared to 7.62 and in the middle of nowhere with minimal support, I promise you, you'd rather have more ammo with you.

San parks don't have a need for that. So they can carry an R1 with a full sized cartridge, 150 rounds no problem. If they were running into PKM's twice a week, I guarantee their equipment load out would change right quick.

It's a solid bush round and branches don't immediately cause it to deflect or tumble. Amount of ammo isn't a deal breaker because I'm assuming they're not getting into extended fire fights, without support. R1 for their purpose makes perfect sense to me, I'd do the same.
