Re: Why does san parks use the R1
There is also the psychological factor.
Back in the day my Bushmen insisted on sticking with R1's when they had the option to use AK's and R4's etc. It made them feel more confident. Perhaps there might be a similar reason behind issuing the R1's now, to make the okes less scared of going out to confront an armed enemy.

Re: Why does san parks use the R1
I had once given my troops the wrong radio frequency and got told to "go find them and give them the right one". When dropped in the KNP, I found that I had left all my magazines at the base (yeah not clever, but I used to shoot 81mm mortars, not R4s). I found one 5.56 round in my battle jacket. I sure wished it was a 7.62.

Re: Why does san parks use the R1
How many mags would a guy on the border carry when the defense force still used the R1?

Re: Why does san parks use the R1
Standard was 1+7 for us with the R1, although we had freedom to carry what we felt like in terms of ammo and/or weapons choice. I assume 1+7 was the same for everybody else

Re: Why does san parks use the R1
I heard from some saps members that al the remaining fixed stock R1's was pulled from service(and some of the remaining para models and almost all of the 7.62ammo). And after asking around I still cant find an answer as to where they went. Don't know if these used by sans parks are some of them. Btw I'm not sure if this is the case at all stations and provinces though.

The first three rounds in the mag are specially made lathe turned brass solids wich have phenomenal penetration on big game and they got most of those R1s as freebies from the sandf back in the day.
