Shotgun stock refurbishment
Hey guys need some advice please . I would like to strip and the stain and oil the stock or use bees wax.
1) How do I go about doing all stripping the varnish off the beach stock and how do i not damage the checkering ?
2) Once the varnish is off do I smooth it out with sand paper or steel wool?
3) Tricky part it's a beach stock so very light if I just us oil or wax. What stain do I use to get a dark brown colour and how do I apply it so as not to get blotches or streaks?
4) Finally what do I use oil or wax and how do you apply it?

Re: Shotgun stock refurbishment
I did a .22 Anschutz beach stock that I posted pics under the hunting rifle section last week that you can look at.
I went about it the long route and used steel wool to remove the old finish that took some time (some people use paint stripper). I taped up the chequering not to mar it. With beach wood being a hard wood oils battle to penetrate it so you must stain it first to the colour you want. I used Nova stain. After staining it I lightly sanded it with water paper and steel wool and then applied schaftol light stock oil by hand. Between each coat I sanded it lightly again and then applied more oil until I reached the desired look I wanted.
Doing it yourself is rewarding

Re: Shotgun stock refurbishment
I did a light beech stock on an air rifle, using paint stripper & a toothbrush on the chequering. I then bought a bottle of "kolfolie - donker" from Hot Power in Krugersdorp West (no name brand - I think its their own home brew), and with 1000 grit water paper, rubbed this kolfolie into the stock a few times over a period of four weeks. The wax in this goo sealed the wood nicely & I have a nice smooth & dark finish that looks like a good walnut stock.
