Default Duicker Eats Guinea Fowl Chick

    Hi

Did anybody watch the "Veld Fokus" segment of 50/50 last night? There was a clip of a common duicker killing and eating a guinea fowl chick, this was a first for me, did some reasearch and found out that this behaviour has been recorded before, you learn new things everyday.

This type of thing intrigues me. Some years back a neighbor would find dead chickens around there place. Dead, chewed, but never eaten. One morning they saw there Haans lamb pick up a baby bantam, chew it and drop it to the ground.

Ive seen this before and its realitively common. The digestion goes along the NPN route (nun protien nitrogen ), much like cattle that are fed fish meal or urea. They eat other sutff as well and are known to eat termites

Duiker eat their own poo. They will also come to investigate if you imitate an animal in distress on hand-blown whistles.

I'm not big on Duiker meat. For obvious reasons.

@ GameFarmer: overheard at a Sunday potjie: "Hey, waddefok, this potjie tastes like shit..." :-P ;-)

I have heard people also not eating warthog and bushpig due to their...err...varied diet.

I once watched a warthog chase a wild dog off a waterbuck carcass and begin feeding only to be chased off again by the dogs. This went oin for a while, and at one point they were both on the carcas. The dogs eventually drove the hog away and very nearly caught it.

Yes. Somewhere last year I submitted photos to Veld fokus of a Honey badger catching and killing a bushbuck. In the same episode that they aired my entry, they also had a video of a Duiker eating a Guinea fowl chick.
