Re: Safe Inspection Directive from SAPS
OK, so I went to my local DFO and the light went on.
If you have firearms that were issued under the old act and you relicensed them, you did not need to upgrade to the new spec safe(SABS).
However, if you purchased a firearm recently you had to buy a new spec. (SABS) safe for that firearm.
What this directive now means is that if you replace your 8/9mm anchor bolts with the spec M10 anchor bolts, your safe will comply with the standards 953.1
This means that you dont need to purchase a new safe if you get new firearms. Local DFO has always been pretty clued up, so I have no reason to doubt this. This was what I had suspected , but wanted verification

Re: Safe Inspection Directive from SAPS
Okay, old thread.. but I recently read through the SABS standards regarding a safe.
Apart from all the standards that I would find hard to identify on my safe, one of the rules is that your safe must be marked by the manufacturer. So, it is my understanding, that even if everything else checks out (bolts, etc), if your safe is not marked in this way, that you fail to adhere SABS standards.
7.2 Marking
Each safe shall bear the following information on legible and indelible marking plates permanently
fixed to the door:
a) On the outside
1) the manufacturer's name, trade name or trade mark;
2) the manufacturer's serial number; and
3) any other marking required by the purchaser (see annex A.1).
b) On the inside
1) the words "Firearms SAFE"; and
2) the type of safe.
Better to stick with an SABS sticker then I reckon.
