Default The 21' knife rule demo'd - with other distances and reactions shown

    In my continuing liveleak trawling:

Nice demo of what to expect from a variety of distances.

Wow, that's really eye-opening. Makes me wonder what the appropriate response is, should someone try mug me again.

That's why some form unarmed combatives are so important.

As you can see back pedaling from a knife attack ' no work '.

Krav Maga does. I may get cut but the attackers fingers, wrist, elbow and shoulder will never point in the right direction again and
any other part I decide to break.

Currently that rule is now considered to be 30 feet...remember, they get to say 'when'...not you.

We have done the 21' knife test and it's easy enough to get two shots off before the attacker reaches you. BUT, that is when you know exactly what to expect, sadly I think I'd have an issue if I had to react to a non threat becoming a threat. In other words, the time it takes to DECISE to react is likely to be the problem.

FYI this clip is taken from "Surviving Edged Weapons", a police training video made in the late 80's IIRC.

gmmcdonald, yes it really is the OODA component of the defender that is the hard part

Very true, find attached a interesting study regarding reaction time by using trained police officers.

I agree, and it shows in the vid. None of the officers defaulted to any form of unarmed defensive tactics. Mostly focused on backpedaling and trying to draw. KM training would definitely change that mindset and increase chances of survival dramatically
