I was going through some old files, today, and found a poem which I wrote back in 1980.

In hindsight, I have to say it was pretty prophetic.

(By the way - as to the reference to bedraggled cocks in the first line, please remember that the cockerel was the election symbol of Mugabe’s ZANU (PF). Those of you who were there in April 1980 may remember the crowds dancing through the streets waving the rather irritated cockerels which they had liberated to display for their victory celebration.)


PEOPLE'S VICTORY

Dance on you jubilant crowds, wave your bedraggled cocks aloft.
This day is yours.
Wring from it each last juicy drop.
It is your last
Hereafter
The days, with all else,
Belong
To Mugabe.

Power comes from the people
But power gathers
In the hands of the few.

When the new police knock on your door
When war again erupts -
Look elsewhere. You made the choice.
My compassion has run dry
And my sympathy has torn to shreds.
