Gunfire shatters suburban tranquillity

RESIDENTS of Bryanston woke up yesterday morning to the sound of gunfire after armed robbers were involved in a shoot-out with Protea Coin security personnel at a Pick n Pay.

"At around 8:15am six men armed with pistols robbed cash-in-transit security personnel who were delivering money to the Pick n Pay at Nicolway centre," said police spokesman warrant officer Moses Maphakela.

He said one of the guards who was waiting in the van opened fire on the suspects.

"The suspects tried to escape in a white Toyota Hilux but its front wheel was shot at," he said.

The suspects then hijacked a bakkie and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.

"No one was injured. We are currently looking for the suspects," said Maphakela.

In another armed robbery three men broke into a jewellery store in Fochville on Saturday.

Police spokesman Constable Elsie Tshonte said one of the men, who was armed, went into the back of the store, where he was confronted by the shop-owner, who shot and killed him. - Yolisa Mkele
