My .404 Jeffery is home.
I am very fortunate to received my .404 Jeffery today. It is a beautiful rifle, it is heavy, short , excellent checkered, the bluing is exceptional and good on the eye. I received some ammo with, 80 years of age, and two boxes of ammo that I will be able to shoot and use the brass. This was a delightful day, a day that I will remember for all times. History of this rifle: This rifle shot the last Elephant in the Thembe region. This rifle shot /cull the elephants and buffaloes in the Ngana era(sleep sickness from tsetse flies in the 1930 ) So gentleman, as I said, I am for sure a privilege person, and I really count my blessings....

Gert, a lovely piece of Africana – I am envious indeed! Tell us a little bit more about how you got to know about the history of the rifle. Who was the maker of the rifle?

Wandering Zero
It is a vz 34 ( still need to make sure) Mauser action, I think it was a Cogswell &Harrison , this rifle was rebarreled in 1976, since the original barrel was shot out and it keyholed . I will make sure, and set the records straight. I love it as it is , in beautiful condition, ready to shoot and hunt, no changes needed. I am in high spirits regarding the exceptional history behind this rifle , if only it can speak, I will be listening all day long. I bought this exceptional rifle for R10000 , somewhere I must have done something real good to somebody else...

Re: My .404 Jeffery is home.
I was looking for a .404 Jeffery the past year, since so many members posted threads regarding .404 Jeffery rifles, it seems only a few members have one indeed, and they are few and far between. Even on the internet forums in other countries the .404 Jeff seems to be considered as a kind of "holy grail" fashion. Then I decided to email John Coleman of the Rhodesian Ranger /PH/Dangerous game hunter, and ask him to email a few requests to all his friend regarding the possibility to get hold of a .404 Jeff for restoring purposes, since I am currently busy, restoring/building a .375 H&H Magnum in concurrence with my mentor gunsmith Johan Greyling of Witbank.
I then received an e-mail from Bill Daly, a friend of John Coleman, stating that he will send out a couple of emails to his friends as well. Two weeks later, one morning, a gentleman by the name of Mike White phoned me and said he has a .404 Jeffery for me if I really am interested I can have it....what an under statement, I was out of my skin, was not thinking straight anymore, decided I will immediately sell my wifes car, we don't really need two cars in today's expensive fuel price environment, and it is for a real good course, I can at least supply my family with much needed venison. But it seems on the end of the day it really was not needed, since Mike White gave it to me for a meagre R10000 vat all inclusive...yes, and now it is mine to cuddle and take with me as an companion, to use for provision of much needed venison...

That is a lovely rifle, Gert. As WZ said, it is a beautiful piece of Africana. Congratulations...I am off to join the end of the line of the many people who are deeply envious!
