Tactical Architecture by Jeff Cooper
Its a classic text and as crime rates rise, I would like to know if there is such a thing (again) in your
country? I can only speak of mine and here all glass entrances and all function follows looks buildings
are prevalent. Great times for bad guys. Cooper had some very interesting thoughts:

I may integrate them into something as this:

I like the grassy sniper-patches on your roof - they look super-comfy!

A lot of security can be integrated into a home without changing costs overly much if thought of from the start.
Sadly most things that can be done after a building is complete are impossible or prohibitively expensive.
I have already told my wife that if we build we will be building a mini fort. It should be aesthetically pleasing but secure.

Probably the most "secure" building you would actually want to live in would be a monolithic dome. They are nearly fire proof and offer limited means of ingress, they are nearly impervious to all but the heaviest rifle caliber fire. As a bonus they are HIGHLY energy efficient.
Another possibility is something designed around sound security principles made with ICF building methods. Very well sealed, again much better fire protection than standard frame homes etc.....
Security is an interesting subject really. For example, a wall was mentioned above. Yes, a wall can be a good idea-obviously it keeps people out (or at least can slow them down) and can provide cover for people within. However, a wall also makes viewing what's going on on the other side of it difficult- and that can be a problem BOTH ways. Nobody can see scumbags breaking into your house and you cannot see what is lurking immediately outside your driveway gate.....There are fixes of course but there are ALWAYS issues it seems.....
