Does anyone have any opinion on the training the Fortis Group provides or have some first hand experience of their training. The fact that they promote the gas gun, which they sell, as a self defense 'weapon' makes me wonder about everything else! Opinions?

You are clearly doubting a proper gasgun as a defensive weapon - do you have actual experience with them?

Re: http://www.fortisgroup.co.za/
Here is our approach - we wnet the less lethal route abt 4 yrs ago. a conscious decision by us. These weapons have proven themselves to be extremely effective, even against farm attacker and actually on a daily basis against poachers as well. We do not proclaim them to be the be-all and end-all and they are not meant to replace a firearm. It is merely another tool, and a very effective alternative to a firearm. But - as with any weapon, it is a tool and the person using it will determine the final effectiveness. So it should ideally form a part of your total defensive system - early warnings, a proper plan of action, regularly practised, we advocate bunkering in instead of charging outside like Rambo to "sort them out" - then they have a very definite place in the hierarchy of defensive weapons. Our training hammers this in. Let's see if people who have been to training with us sees this and replies. Let them speak for themselves.

Who have got these big guns? The guys trying to get into your house to rob you? Show me stats of how often they come in with big guns instead of handguns or even the spade you forgot to lock away.

Re: http://www.fortisgroup.co.za/
I haven't tested the Fortis guns, but I have tested others. They seem to be an effective tool for the function they serve. They hit hard and the pepperballs are potent. As already said, they don't replace a firearm by any shape or form, but can be used when lethal force is not warranted. That said, it is hard to imagine the kind of scenario in which a person would have the luxury of being able to swap from non lethal to lethal should the need arise.
If I have multiple attackers with handguns (this happened to my neighbor a few months ago) I know I would rather have my LM5.
