Default Removing rifle/s bolt when vacating your home.

    Hi Guys.

I'm pretty sure that this topic has been discussed before but I failed to get a result while searching on my mobile.

Anyway. Last month and now this past weekend, I went away for the weekend. My SD pistol and the wife's pistol are obviously accompanying us on our journeys. I removed the bolt on my hunting rifle and took it with me. My reasoning is that if my primary and secondary security measures fail, (Dogs, alarm, Armed Response, safety gates, burglar bars and gun safe ) the BG's wouldn't be able to use the rifle. Ok, It's not that difficult for them to get a bolt again but I had this idea and stuck with it so far. It seems like a good deterrent. What are your opinions ? Good idea ? Unnecessary, Bad idea ? Thank you gents.

I keep everything I don't need immediately stored in this manner most of the time. Its doubtful that my security will be breached but it gives me peace of mind. I obviously don't carry the parts with me, I stash then in difficult to find, yet secure, places.

Good practice, maybe not entirely neccessary, but it works for me.

    The law doesn't require it.

...I am not so worried about the legal requirements as I am more determined to make life for the low life dief difficult so if he does penetrate my Alcatraz hopefully he sees no bolt and leaves it behind because he cant be bothered. I also hide my bolts etc...My SD of course is always with me.

So it is legal to stash a firearm part, like the bolt, somewhere else than the safe you had inspected by SAPS? It's a good idea. I also thought of it but never went so far. Do they in all cases steal the long guns as well? I thought their main target is handguns that they can use for robberies as the long guns are too difficult too hide and conceal for them.

The low lifes steal EVERYTHING. If it looks nice, it is gone.

Makes perfect sense, in my case I store bolts in a seperate safe, a bolt is not a licensed part.

Thanx for the replies guys. Yes, another little safe well hidden would be ideal. My concern is that if all the preventives fail, there is a low life with my rifle and he's most probably going to kill with it. They definitely don't leave any firearm behind, even air rifles are stolen. I attended to a Farm-attack where the BG's used a hunting rifle. How about shotguns ? I'm not very familiar with semi autos and pump actions. Can they also be 'neutralised' in a similar way ? I assume they're sought after by the BG's as they are good 'tools' to open doors etc.

What about trigger guards or locks? They can render any firearm useless.
