"Durban - A violent home invader was shot in a Richards Bay house on Monday evening. The attacker had just hit a woman over the head with a crowbar while a second attacker, armed with a broken brick, beat the woman’s grandmother, who was left with severe bruising on her arms as she defended herself.
Riana Roestorff, a visitor from Lydenburg, said their whole family had gathered at her daughter’s house for a braai.
“There were 13 of us - my mom, my daughters, their partners and children and friends. We were all inside the lounge when the security gate burst open and two men stormed in.
“One man flung a brick into the lounge. It broke when it hit the wall and he picked up a large broken piece. He swung around wildly, demanding our cellphones.”
Miguel da Costa, the homeowner, said he tried to reason with the man.
    Drugged

“I said we will give him what he wanted, but he must leave quietly. However, the man was wild. I’m sure he was drugged. He screamed and demanded our cellphones. My partner, Marlese Roestorff, came to her grandmother’s aid when he hit her with the broken brick and then the second attacker struck.
“This man was armed with a crowbar and he hit Marlese over the head. She dropped down, bleeding profusely from a large gash in her head.
“My father, Luis, was in his room adjacent to the lounge and he heard the commotion. He peeked around the door and saw what was happening. He grabbed his gun and stormed out, motioning to me to stay out of the line of fire. He screamed at the attacker, who was trying to hit Marlese again, and then he fired two shots.”
The armed attacker dropped to the floor, injured, and the second one grabbed two phones from the dining room table and ran away.
Although Da Costa jnr tried to follow the fleeing man, he couldn’t find him. He did, however, recover a television set and other items that the two had stolen from another house in the area earlier that evening.
“The police arrived within three minutes and they were brilliant,” said Roestorff. “Paramedics helped my daughter and took her to hospital for treatment. The forensics squad were there to take fingerprints and the dog squad arrived a while later from Empangeni to try trace the remaining suspect.”
The injured man is under police guard in hospital.

I have to admit my mindset has changed over the last 2 months reading numerous posts (like these) and opinions on the forum.
My FA is now on my person 24/7!

(Only goes in the safe when I take a shower and only because we have 2 small kids)

Firstly, well done to this chap for saving his family's lives the only questions I have is what happened to his FA? Did they take it or are they going to take it? Was he taken to the cop-shop, etc...Basically what happens after the cops arrive vs what SHOULD happen after the cops arrive.

Always have more than 1 FA. The SD gun is basically a disposable piece of equipment. You can very likely with a lawyer fight to get if back ASAP, but always have more than 1.

Pity the law only allows one SD slot (yes, use the sport slots, but the law is just stupid) - any logical 'SD limit' should always be more than one!

On another note, if the cops did actually get there in three minutes, that's another notable point - well done to them on that kind of response time.
