Default Speed Modify your Spyderco / Cold Steel for 30 cents

Any knife with a thumbhole and a that lies at the bottom of the blade when the knife is in the pocket i.e the hole is at the opposite side of the clip can be modified with cable tie ends.No cutting the blade and no damage.Dont want it anymore just cut them off. This system is lightning fast just like the Emerson wave.Just a little practice.I have been carrying blades for 24 years and this is the best system.I have used my Civillian twice and my Harpy once in legitimate self defence where I used the system and it worked every time. The photos show my Cold Steel Black Talon and my Spyderco Dodo modified. The Dodo i actually carry in my shirt and use the button to open it.Most people think it is a pen.Remember if you carry a gun or a blade it is mindset that will get you through an unpleasant situation.Think functionality over looks. tup[img]

Wow, what a great, simple, easy, cheap, fast, reversable modification!! Thanks a lot for the idea!
I recently posted links to a webpage showing how to use a dremel tool to 'wave' a thumbhole, but this looks like a great alternative.
    Thanks again for sharing.

If you want to stake your life on getting an open knife in your hand you'd better make sure the opening method works everytime.

I have experienced "wave" fitted knives that sometimes fail to open as planned due to operator error induced by stress/pressure/etc .

That is why the No 1 method for a knife you stake your life on is a FIXED BLADE, carried in such a manner that you can get it out quick and secure.

Echo on the ditto's... I only carry fixed blades now. I much prefer gross motor grab-'n-stab over fine motor regrip-3-times folders, but IF for whatever reason a folder had to be carried, a wave/cabletie-type mod would be the way to go.

I also carry a fixed blade on a mercharness. The problem with fixed blades is at security points e.g. banks. If the guard happens to pick it up 1 in 1000000 chance as they are usually fast asleep, you may be denied access.A folder is normally 'just my pocketknife' and without looking you will have entered as most people out there don't realise how dangerous a toothpick can be in determined hands. When I was mugged by two cretins I could not get to my fixed blade , but I could get to my Civillian.A little backwards stab to the genital / femoral artery area was all it took.Had I not had the civillian with the quick opener I would have been toast.I practice all the time and make sure the ties are in place.Without practice even a fixed blade will let you down, just like a gun will. When the panic gremlins hit home it is easy to make a mistake with anything.People who do well on the range have been known to miss completely in a real situation.A lot of guys think because they are armed they are safe.ANYONE CAN GET TAKEN DOWN EVEN THE BEST TRAINED,but if your mindset is right you definately have the fighting chance.

    Yes.

When the panic gremlins hit home it is easy to make a mistake with anything

    Yes,

and the more movements and interactions you rely on the more the chances are that a mistake will occur

    Yes

anfd that is why we train with what we carry and why we do EQB and CQB courses with the likes of SWATG and why we do force on force training.

Unfortunately due to financial or work /family restraints not everyone who has a gun or knife on their person will or even want to do a CQB or any other course. In the same breath not everyone who has done these courses and has twenty certificates on the wall will actually use a gun or knife against another person. It is the same as the hunter who gives his knife to the tracker to cut the throat of the Kudu he has just shot with his 338 Lapua at 700 meters. There was no contact with the shot but to cut the throat involves contact and the fact that he is staring in those big brown eyes makes it worse.I once attended a sniper selection course -not to be a sniper but to observe. The selectors were not interested in the ability of the applicants shooting prowess or fitness but in their mental ability to absorb what the job requires. The head instructor explained that it was easy to teach someone to shoot and be fit,but the most important thing was their ability to kill someone. Two guys who had previous combat experience were selected out of eleven.Their shooting wasnt bad either .I have the faith that I will not be attacked by an honest person who did CQB ,ITA , AMOK , BLACKWATER , SUAREZ or any of the multitude of people that are around.I am probably going to be attacked by an untrained mug who has no proper knife or gun knowledge. That person uses it as a slash and burn or a spray and pray. They are as nervous as hell and totally unpredictable and that is what makes them so dangerous.Carry what you are comfortable with.Practice with it but most important know your surround,be careful and do not try to be a hero. Have the combat mindsetTHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE WEAPON YOU CARRY.

Underestimating your opponent will leave you dead. Train as if you are facing the twisted love child of Larry Vickers and Gabe Suarez. That way if he is an eejit you are ahead of the game.

While not all our opponents are well trained and motivated many are. They are also probably also far more comfortable with violence than most of us. While he may not have had formal shooting or blade training (though he may have as well) he will very likely have shot and stabbed people as well. So he may have experience not on a nice neat range or in a nice clean dojo but actually metal to meat.
